Learnvest, I have a little internet crush on them. Call it a blogger’s own version of techno-romace. Their email newsletter is really useful, and I just love the idea of empowering women financially. It’s something that we don’t necessarily learn. No one, literally, thought to teach me how a 401K works, and I’m an educated, driven (and at this point, pretty competent) white girl.
I digress, but money and money management, while they aren’t exactly romantic, are a huge part of successful long term partnerships. And in the developing world, it’s clear that women invest any money in their families, which leads to greater social health overall. Go. Ladies.
Today, in honor of International Women’s Day. Learnvest ran a really good piece on why charitable giving to women is one of the very best things you can do for the world. For example…
“When you invest in women, they typically invest 90% back into the health, nutrition and education of their families, as opposed to 30-40% for men,” says Karen Sherman, Executive Director for Global Programs at Women for Women, a non-profit that provides financial aid, job training, rights awareness and leadership education to women in conflict and post-conflict countries.
“Studies by organizations like the World Bank show that investing in women allows countries to grow and govern more effectively,” says Sherman. “When women can earn an income and have a seat at the negotiating table, they can create a more stable and peaceful society and economy. When women’s rights are not taken into account … the health and well-being of the economy and society deteriorate.”
Check it. All the ladies in the place, I’m callin’ out to ya.
